Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father left her family. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford began to be interested in acting as a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one month, she decided that it wasn't for her. Ford made an application for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered an interview on her fourth attempt. One of her classmates included Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford did not finish her studies until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance on the show Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate was also a regular performer as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. Tate gained recognition as a stand-up comedian and became part of her resume in 1996.
